Study Tips

1. Have a positive attitude. You are more likely to succeed at something if you think you can versus if you think you can’t.

2. Ask your teachers for help before it is too late. Do not wait the day before a test or a project is due to seek help. Ask questions early and often!

3. When you sit down to study or do homework, make sure it is a quiet well lit area so that you are able to concentrate. Make it a place with as few distractions as possible and have materials handy so you are not wasting time looking for pencils, paper, etc.

4. Allow time for study breaks. Follow this rule, study for 20 minutes take a 5 minute break then go back to studying 

• Marathon sessions (or studying for long hours) are the least effective way to study

• Good study skills are about being efficient. Do you want to study for 4 hours when you can study for 2 hours?

• Write down: names, places, dates, key terms, phrases, related facts, quotes, rules, laws

• Create a calendar to help keep track of assignments; use your planner to plan ahead

• Use post-its to take notes while you read 

• Study at the same place and time everyday with all of the material you will need nearby

Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ teachers are available to help students with homework assignments in English and mathematics. This service is available to all students in grades K-12. “Homework Hotline” phone numbers, grade level, and specific subject areas are listed for your convenience."
